Using these special characters also comes in handy when employing Textastic’s Find and Replace function, since the feature supports regular expression searches for more precise results. After a while, this selection process becomes second nature. Swiping toward the intended character will generate it within the document. Even though these special keys are tiny on an iPhone screen, selecting these virtual keys are intuitive thanks to the way they can be tapped on, expanding to a larger size of the various characters on the key. Both the iPhone and iPad feature a custom row of keys on the soft keyboard that provides access to the most common programming characters such as angle and square brackets, hash and vertical bar symbols, and even multiple tab indentations. Too bad it’s only available on the iPad version. But when an external keyboard is too bulky or unavailable, the navigation wheel sure comes in handy.

That said, the optimal Textastic experience is on an iPad Pro using Apple’s Smart Keyboard (Textastic supports additional programmer-centric keyboard shortcuts by holding down the Command or control key on an external keyboard). You can also invoke a cursor navigation wheel on the iPad for more exact directional movements by performing a two finger tap within the editor.
Swiping left or right with one finger on the screen moves the text cursor one character, two fingers moves it one word and three fingers one section or paragraph at a time. Navigating text elements on an iPad or, even more challengingly, on an iPhone, may sound daunting, but Textastic greatly simplifies this basic necessity.
